Angostura and A.R.R.O.W continue to improve Literacy in the Laventille/Morvant community
Heeding the call by the Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Keith Rowley, to help improve schools in the Laventille/Morvant area, the House of Angostura has, for several years, been supporting the A.R.R.O.W. Foundation in raising the standards of reading and spelling and improving the numeracy level of children both at the Primary and Secondary school levels.
This year, Angostura is proud to sponsor Phase I of the A.R.R.O.W. (an acronym for Aural, Read, Respond, Oral, Write) Literacy Program at the Malick Secondary School. Students will be selected from the school population and assessed in their reading and spelling to address their individual literacy needs. They will then be placed into individual learning programs catered to their specific needs. Parents and teachers will also participate in workshops geared towards providing additional support to these students during the program.
Angostura’s Executive Manager – Corporate Services, Rahim Mohammed, stated “Angostura is cognizant of its role as a model corporate citizen within the community of Laventille/Morvant, which it takes very seriously. The Company has supported many initiatives over the years that seek to improve the lives of its residents, in particular the youths of the community and we are pleased to once again be able to work with the A.R.R.O.W. Foundation to bring its literacy program to yet another school in the area”.
Christopher Bonterre, Managing Director, A.R.R.O.W. Foundation, commended Angostura for its continued support of the program. “There is such compelling evidence of the link between low literacy skills and poor behaviour and it is in this vein that A.R.R.O.W is committed to giving all students an opportunity to not only improve their literacy skills, but to also improve their self-esteem and self-confidence, which are crucial to students believing in themselves and their abilities. We would like to again thank Angostura for its vision towards nation building in Trinidad and Tobago, and towards A.R.R.O.W.’s mission of providing a promising future for all our children”.
